[Advertisement placed by Nathaniel Phillips, sieve-maker in
Taunton. First part is straight ad: "carries on the
manufactory of making sieve bottom;" then a reward ad:
"Strayed from the subscriber, a quantity of horse-hair . . .
;" then the following lyric:]
Dear countrymen all, to you I call,
O hearken to my ditty.
Horse-hair's a thing which wealth may bring
To country, town, or city--
Sieve bottoms we may have, you see,
In our own country made.
O this will be, I hope to see,
One fine branch of our trade.
Two pound of hair, I do declare,
Will make nigh on a dozen,
Which when you've half, 'twill make you laugh
To see your pocket's risen.
Forty dollars a pound (though it is a great sound)
For horse-hair now I give,
And as much more, I'd give, before
My friends shou'd want a sieve. June 1780
